First Steps in a New City

There is a specific moment we never get tired of: the crate door opens at arrivals and the tail starts going.

The journey

This poodle mix flew as accompanied baggage — booked on the same flight as her owner, checked in at the passenger terminal, and released at the destination baggage area rather than a separate cargo facility.

Why accompanied baggage is often best

  • Same aircraft, same schedule as the owner
  • Faster release on arrival than manifest cargo
  • Usually cheaper than a standalone cargo booking

It is not available on every airline or every route, and there are size limits, but where it works it is the smoothest option for medium-sized dogs.

Arrival checklist

  1. Collect the crate before clearing customs where the airport allows it.
  2. Attach a leash before opening the door.
  3. Offer water, not food.
  4. Head straight to a grass or relief area.
  5. Inspect paws, nose, and gums for signs of dehydration.

Twenty minutes after this photo she was asleep in the back of the car, in a new city, completely unbothered.
